Way to go ASM!

August 2, 2009

Need a place to sleep the night of the 14th? ASM has reserved the 3rd and 4th floors of the student activities center for students who have no place to stay and don’t want to spend the night leaned against a tree, defenseless because of Wisconsin’s prohibition of concealed weapons. The State Journal campus blog:

This year, UW-Madison’s student government is providing a safe place for students to spend the night. Under a program called Move Out Night, the third and fourth floors of the student activities tower, 333 East Campus Mall, will be open for 24 hours beginning at 10 a.m. August 14.

There’s only room for 269, but alcohol is not allowed, which should deter enough people to make it a pleasant experience for those who do spend the night there.

Kudos to student leaders for at least attempting to confront what has become an annual debacle. Although frankly the current situation, in which practically all leases end Aug 14, is the lesser of many evils, the city and campus should be doing more to make the system more flexible. For instance, in the apartment I am moving into in two weeks, we asked the owners if we would be able to move in a day early if the current tenants moved out early, to which they responded in the affirmative. However, when we asked them if we could contact the tenants to ask them of their plans, or if they themselves could contact the tenants, the company said no – that’s just not something they do.
