Labor Brunch

by

Happy Labor Day! Any advice on cook out locations for those of us without yards? I’m tempted to grill on top of Mad Dogs, the hot dog joint next door – wouldn’t that be ironic?

I would like to begin today by posting a correction to a previous post. In discussing the potential bar at University Square, I quoted Ald. Bridget Maniaci as expressing concern over the bar’s capacity. I now realize, after a puzzled response from Maniaci, that I mixed up something she said on a different issue. For the record, Maniaci supported the development and is disappointed by the treatment it received by the Alcohol License Review Committee. I regret this mistake.

“Flags will fly, brats will be grilled and, in some cities, parades will mark the Labor Day holiday. But this Labor Day has a different feel. Thousands have lost jobs and displaced workers have gone back to school for retraining. Industries that have defined communities have vanished.”

Talk about poor decisions: Two UW-Madison men’s basketball players were jailed Sunday on tentative charges of burglary and underage drinking in the thefts of portable music players, a cell phone and $400 cash from “numerous” dormitory rooms, university police said in a news release.

CineMadison‘s Dan Sullivan is spotted by a Madison fashion blogger.

Eric Schmidt’s “fiscally conservative” Democrat, Kathleen Falk, is presiding over a budget disaster.

Although I do agree with Schmidt, the Cap Times ed board lives in an industrial fantasy land. What starts out as a much-needed criticism of Wal-Mart digresses into dreams about the factory jobs of yore.

The drunk driving solution of the week definitely comes from State Rep. Alvin Ott, who is proposing “pedal pubs” for Wisconsin.

Tom Barrett says he’d be “surprised” if he and Ron Kind run for governor.
