Van Hollen wins budget back

The Dept. of Justice had half of its proposed budget cuts restored last night by the Assembly Democrats.

Van Akkeren, a Democrat from Sheboygan who co-authored the motion, said the move restores $5.4 million to the DOJ budget. The proposed budget is scheduled for a vote today before the Assembly.

This change could drastically alter the upcoming debate on the budget. Although Republicans will likely continue to harp on the sentencing reform championed by the Dems, that attack will be considerably less effective now that it is not longer supplemented by allegations of a “partisan attack on law enforcement.”

What’s interesting about this whole debate is how little the numbers being discussed are. I actually met a DOJ environmental lawyer last night, who pointed out how little the DOJ budget cuts are in relation to the budget for the nursing school proposed by Judy Robson ($47 million). Environmental enforcement was one of the areas that Van Hollen warned would be hard hit by the budget cuts.
