Dave Obey leading fight on health care

The Journal-Sentinel has a good article on Rep. Dave Obey’s (D-Up North) hopes to reform health care as chairman of the House Appropriations Committee.

“Every bad thing (Bill Clinton’s) opponents said would happen if we passed Clinton’s package has happened,” he said. “Costs have risen out of sight; the number of uninsured has continued to rise; (there are) more denials because of pre-existing conditions.”

Call me a sucker, but it’s a relief to have a guy in that position who discusses the moral implications of his work.

For reasons of mercy, for reasons of decency, as well as for reasons of affordability, we have got to attack health care waste and inequities in this country,” he said. “We’ve got to have health care reform.”

And it’s good to have a guy who’s willing to shut up the blowhards he’s often opposed by.

When former House Speaker Newt Gingrich complained about a perceived snub on Air Force One, Obey entered into the Congressional Record Archy’s poem about Warty Bliggens, a toad who believed the Earth existed “to grow toadstools for him to sit under.”
