TRAINS!

by

No joke. Wisconsin could be laying down some serious track soon. From Wispolitics:

Gov. Jim Doyle was in Washington, D.C., today to meet with Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to talk about high speed rail projects in Wisconsin.

“There is a real opportunity for Wisconsin and the Midwest to become a leader in high speed passenger rail,” Doyle said in a statement. “We need good, modern rail to revitalize our country’s infrastructure and economy.”

Also attending the meeting were Michigan Gov, Jennifer Granholm, Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Here’s the problem with America: Because we were so smart and innovative, we were the first to invent the car. And we were damn proud of it. Hence, railroads were deemed a thing of the past throughout most of the country, and all of the transportation investment in this country went into highways, decades before the energy crisis demonstrated the threat our indulgence in cars poses to our environment, our economy, and even our national security. This time, it might do as some good to look over to the Old Continent, where most countries have highly sophisticated rail systems that are much faster than cars for travelling long distances. French high speed trains, for instance, go up to 350 mph.

When it comes to federal funding, Wisconsin is in a very favorable position. More so than some of those other states. Not only is Rep. Dave Obey the chair of the Appropriations Committee, but Rep. Steve Kagen sits on Transportation, and Tammy Baldwin is on Energy and Commerce.

And the best thing about trains is that they don’t strip search you before you can board.

You speak the truf Nonies. What’s great is getting to the station and boarding the train 5 minutes before take off.

Trains are a fun little toy at Christmas time. END OF STORY.
